The Sommer parameter \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tr\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t=\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0.5\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\tfm\t\t\t\t\t\t is used to set the scale. Discretization errors and the continuum limit are discussed in detail. By comparison with existing \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSU\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2\t\t\t\t\t\t\t)\t\t\t\t\t\t and \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSU\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(\t\t\t\t\t\t\t3\t\t\t\t\t\t\t)\t\t\t\t\t\t data it is found that \t\t\t\t\t\t\tσ\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tr\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t=\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1.65\t\t\t\t\t\t\t−\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tπ\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t24\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t holds at an accuracy of 1% for all \t\t\t\t\t\t\tN\t\t\t\t\t\t\t⩾\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2\t\t\t\t\t\t . The effective central charge \t\t\t\t\t\t\tc\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(\t\t\t\t\t\t\tr\t\t\t\t\t\t\t)\t\t\t\t\t\t is obtained and an intermediate distance \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tr\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ts\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t is defined via the property \t\t\t\t\t\t\tc\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tr\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ts\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t)\t\t\t\t\t\t\t=\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tπ\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t24\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t . It separates in a natural way the short-distance regime governed by perturbation theory from the long-distance regime described by an effective string theory.
